Morris Knudsen Australia - MKA Class

This locomotives were built by English Electric Company and supplied to Queensland Railways. Seven of this locos were sold to Morrison Knudsen, who converted them for further use. Four of these locos, MKA1-4, were hired to KTMB in 1994. The locos were giving a lot of technical problems no sooner had they been introduced. One of the main problems was the unreliability of their traction motors. Another reason was that the cab being rebuilt with a forward facing control desk, rather than the centralised control stand they cannot be worked long nose forward and would have to be turned at each end.  I am not sure if this is true because I got this information from another webstie. They have since been returned to Australia, refurbished and hired to a mining company in South Africa. MKA locos were the first and only loco in KTMB history to have air-conditioned driver's cab. MKA locos produce 1800 horsepower.
