81 class EMU (Electric Multiple Units) were the first electric trains ordered by KTMB. Perhaps due to government to government deal, it was bought from Jenbacher Austria. The manufacturer’s rail subsidiary itself has been absorbed into General Electrics. This series of EMU has a very bad track record when comes reliability among the all the EMU series. Only the 82 class perhaps worse. It’s a rare sight to see 81 class in service these days. Most of them have been scrapped.
The seating inside is very different compared to the other EMUs. It’s better suited for long distances compared to the rest which have common light rail seat configuration. The 81 class also makes a unique sound when accelerating.
